There is NO doubt that Almunia was a decent, if not reliable keeper. He did his best and had he been gifted with more self-assurance and improved support from the fans, he might have over-reached himself like he did against Barca at home 2 years ago. That said, he never achieved what Szcesny did in one season, that is to instil confidence and belief in his teammates, the manager and the supporters. I have no fear of crazy, hapless errors occuring when he's in goal. This does prove however that our back 4 caused more grief than any of our keepers. when Guangzhou scored from a free kick, it was Mannone's failure to trap the ball (a basic keeping skill) and Squillaci's failure to cut out the striker, that allowed them to score. Really basic stuff but does tell us a great deal.

He was around the period of 07-09, the last 2 seasons the errors have started to creep into his game (declining with age?) and he's no longer the consistent presence he used to be.

Agree about Szczesny, although I think his decision-making still needs improving with regard to when to come off/stay on his line.
