Laurent Koscielny 2010/2011, Part 1

Since joining Arsenal at the start of the season, Laurent Koscielny has been an almost-permanent fixture in the centre of defence. Despite some inconsistent performances early on (due mainly to an unstable partnership with fellow newcomer Sebastian Squillaci), he has generally been an excellent acquisition and fits in seamlessly with the club's defensive ethic, pressing high and winning the ball back early. These are some of his highlights from August til December:

Fantastic video, once again (Y)

I was a bit wary about the frequency with which he looked to step out and get to the ball ahead of the forward at first - a problem Clichy has had over recent years, as when it goes wrong, it leaves your area of the field very exposed - but his timing is brilliant, and his mobility is deceptively good - as the tackle on Lennon evidences.

A fantastic all-round centre-back, and should Vermaelen return to the sort of form he exhibited in his first season with us - hoping his injury hasn't hindered him too much - then our perceived defensive problems should be over.

Thanks!

I think Koscielny still needs to work a bit on his aerial game, despite a great willingness to challenge in the air he's frequently been guilty of losing out on key headers from set pieces (hence his and Squillaci's terrible record in that regard) and misjudging the flight of long balls, resulting in poor clearances and some dangerous backwards headers.
Great video mate.
Great work, first class.

The words anticipation and timing were the things that stand out for me.

Indeed, his reading of the game is top class, there's also an intelligence about the way he chooses his moments to close down opposition players.
